 1. Not all bodies on the ground under sacred tree are laid.

There are 4 types of graveyards in Trunyan village which are distinguished by age and cause of death.  The four cemeteries in Trunyan are:

 A. Setra Wayah (Old Graveyard)

Setra Wayah (Old Graveyard) is a cemetery inhabited by people who died of natural causes.  Generally people who are old and sick.  The body is laid on the floor covered with a cloth but the face is visible and the beloved objects that had been involved in his life are also taken to the cemetery.  Then the corpse is covered with trapezoidal woven bamboo called ancak, which serves to protect the corpse from animals that want to eat it.

Setra Wayah is considered sacred.  Only 11 bodies may be placed above ground in this cemetery.  When new body arrives, the oldest body is moved to the edge or the rest of the skull and bones are so arranged on the terrace of burial place.  Why is only 11 bodies allowed to be placed above the ground?  Because the number 11 is the highest spiritual number according to Hinduism, which is believed to be the symbol of perfection

B. Setra muda (young graveyard),

Sema Muda is a graveyard inhabited by deceased babies or small children who still have baby teeth, as well as adults who are not yet married.  Unlike Setra Wayah, here the bodies are buried in the ground.  The Sema Muda is located on a cliff near Setra Wayah.

 C. Setra Bantas (Border Cemetery),

Setra Bantas (Border Cemetery) is a cemetery located on the border of Trunyan village with other villages.  This cemetery for people who died unnatural way such as accident, murder, suicide, incomplete body.  For the unnatural deceased, the body is buried in the ground of Bantas Setra which is located at the entrance of Trunyan village.

D. Setra Gandamayu (placenta graveyard),

Setra Gandamayu (placenta graveyard) is a graveyard for the placenta.  Generally the Balinese have the habit of burying the placenta of the baby at home but in trunyan village they have their own graveyard for the placenta.  The baby's placenta is hung on the trees of the placental cemetery.  The people of Trunyan village never bury the placenta in their yard because the placenta is considered unclean.

2. The women of Trunyan are not allowed to participate in funeral procession.

If you visit Trunyan village and have the opportunity to participate in the funeral procession, you will certainly not encounter any women from Terunyan village in the cemetery.  This belief has been passed down from generation to generation by villagers, this is because women have high emotional levels and it is feared that they will not be able to withstand the grief when their family or relatives are buried.  The most serious effect is that they are difficult to take home and want to stay in the graveyard.  But this only applies to the inhabitants of Trunyan village and not to tourists.

 3. Strangely enough, the corpse doesn't smell

The dead are not buried but the bodies are placed on the ground in the open air.  Strangely enough, you don't smell such a stench at all.  It is said that this is because the corpses are placed near a sacred tree.  The stench of the bodies is neutralized by sacred tree called taru menyan.

4. What happened when a villager dies?

If a villager of Trunyan dies, the entire community is unclean for 3 days and the relatives involved are unclean for 12 days.  During this unclean period, people are not allowed to perform ritual prayers anywhere.  Activities return to normal when the unclean period ends.  If twins died at the same time, the entire community is unclean for 42 days.  After 42 days, great ceremony is held to purify the village again.
